CDefine Your Customer Avatarreating a “Customer Avatar” is a really simple way to significantly improve the effectiveness of your marketing. For any business to be successful, you have to understand who it is that you are trying to sell to. When you have a detailed understanding of your target customer, it is so much easier to write content, headlines and ads that speak directly to your target market.

Many people make the mistake of trying to reach too broad of a demographic. You may have a general idea of who is most likely to buy your product, but you must understand that it is critical you take the time to clearly define who your IDEAL customer is.

Creating a “Customer Avatar” is simply creating a customer profile of the ideal person you wish to sell to.

Here are 31 questions to get a better grasp of who your ideal customer is:

  1. Give your customer a Name
  2. Gender
  3. Age
  4. Married/Single
  5. Kids
  6. Lifestyle
  7. Profession
  8. Income
  9. Own/Rent
  10. Type of House and what do they pay for housing?
  11. What city, state, country do they live in?
  12. Do they live in the city or suburbs?
  13. Car type
  14. What do they desire or want… what motivates them?
  15. What are their fears, frustrations and challenges?
  16. What keeps them up at night?
  17. What do they like and dislike?
  18. How do they relax?
  19. What magazines/books do they read?
  20. What social media channels do they frequent?
  21. What tech gadgets do they own?
  22. Are they internet shoppers?
  23. What objections could they have to buying?
  24. How do they make their buying decisions?
  25. What are some of their favorite brands?
  26. What are their favorite movies/TV shows?
  27. What type of foods do they eat and what are their favorite drinks?
  28. What restaurants do they frequent?
  29. Where do they buy their groceries?
  30. What type of vacations do they take?
  31. What are they doing right now?

You may feel that some of the above questions don’t matter or pertain to your business…but the more specific you can get with your answers, the more you will begin to truly understand your ideal customer. You need to begin to think like someone buying your product.

If you want to go one step further, after answering all of the above questions, go on Google put in search words for images of a person who you think might fit your profile. Look thru the images, odds are one will jump out at you as your “ideal customer.” Print off the picture and keep it next to your computer along with the questions you answered about that ideal customer.

Bottom line is, the better you know your target audience, the more you will be able to connect with them. You’ll know where to find them and how to motivate them to buy what you have that can truly solve whatever problem they have that needs solving. Find a need and fulfill it… Success 101!
