Skill Set Optimization

You may not be aware that you’re limiting yourself by not exploring all possible avenues where you can apply your skills. Knowing what you’re good at is half the battle. You must know how to apply your knowledge and abilities to make the most of income-generating opportunities.

We all have a skill set that we gained through years of experience. Whether you’re good at marketing or creating programs, your particular skill set can take your revenues to new heights. So, how are you using your skill set to increase your income? Are you overlooking potential uses of your skills, losing extra income in the process?

I’ll use my skill set as an example for this article. After years and years of creating online tools, I can say that I’ve mastered the process of making WordPress plugins. You’ve probably seen and used some of them that I have created.

So, what do these plugins that I have constructed mainly do? They basically create a form you fill in to produce a code. Then, you add the code to your website to perform a specific function. Almost every WordPress plugin is basically a form filler.

A form filler is a basic plugin where we ask questions and users complete the form with the required information.

We take that information, fill in a template, and then display the information on your website. Basically, the process involves selecting the right questions and making the right templates. The sky is the limit at that point.

So, creating a form filler is one thing I’m really good at it. But what else can I make based on that skill set? To get serious about that, what I need to do is explore various ways to generate income relevant to plugin creation. This is not just about plugins that I or my typical customers might use, but also those plugins that are usable outside my market or field.

You have to think outside the box when creating products and services that people want.

A lot can be done with plugins! I can create WordPress themes, banners, logos, video players, and the list goes on and on. I have this idea of making a 3D cover simply by filling in the blanks. It’s essentially the same concept as a form filler, although it creates a more complex product.

As mentioned, you can do numerous things with your skill set even outside your existing target market and create an almost unlimited income by doing it. Let’s answer a few questions so you can better understand the best uses for your skills.

The first question, of course, is what is your particular skill set? This can be a combination of your knowledge, abilities, and personal qualities that you developed over the years through work experience, school, and social roles.

Let’s say you excel at making graphics, and you offer professional graphic design for websites. But why stop there? Graphic design experts bring marketing ideas to life and inject creativity into various types of content.

You can apply your skill to a wide array of products, including banners, logos, business cards, posters, book covers, and digital marketing ads. Anything that requires graphics is a potential source of income.

Let’s take another example. How about if you’re good at advertising on Google. Are you limiting yourself to advertising only your own products? With this skill set, you can make a lot more money if you apply it to advertising affiliate products. You could even offer your services and manage other people’s ads for them for a price or a fraction of their current advertising costs.

How many areas are you applying your skill set to? How many services or products are you making money from based on that skill set? I think many people are simply underselling themselves.

People limit themselves and fail to use their skill set to their fullest potential.

You have to stop shortchanging yourself. Many of your skills are not simply one-off skills. Think about it for just a moment. Are you missing out on opportunities because you believe your skill is just for one specific thing and nothing else? The truth is that you can leverage your knowledge and abilities into so much more.

Take some time RIGHT NOW to evaluate the skills that you have. Whether you have excellent advertising, information technology, or data analysis skills, you likely have the ability in numerous areas of your skill set that could magnify your income. You have so many skills you’ve acquired through the course of your life, and you probably have more than you realize. Some of those skills are extremely valuable, not only to you but to other people as well.

There may be things that seem simple to you because you’ve been doing them repetitively for so long. But remember—not everyone can do them. Some people don’t know how to do those tasks well or don’t have the time to accomplish them, and these people are willing to pay to get things done.

So, what skills can you leverage to create an additional income stream for your business? What side hustles can you do with your skill set? Think of the things you can do amazingly that other people find incredibly valuable. How do you package them up into something people would want?

I know it can be hard to recognize your special skills. I would tell you to list everything you already do for your business. Sometimes we just take for granted what we’ve learned over the years. We think lots of people already know how to do it anyway. Well, you’re absolutely wrong. You’d be surprised how many people will pay to get even the simplest things done for them.

Always ask yourself, “How can I apply this skill set? What can I offer to bring in more income? What can I build around this?” When you find ways to use your skill set creatively, you can easily multiply your income and discover more things you do well.
